Red Sox Place Garrett Whitlock On Injured List, Recall Tyler Samaniego From Worcester

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have placed right-handed reliever Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 25, because of left knee inflammation, the club announced Thursday. To take his place on the active roster, Boston recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock, 29, has been one of the Red Sox’ most reliable bullpen arms this season, posting a 3-1 record with a 3.20 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 19.2 innings across 20 appearances. The move sidelines a key contributor who has been particularly dominant dating back to last season.

Since Aug. 21, 2025, Whitlock has compiled a 5-1 record with 16 holds, a 1.85 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 34 innings in his last 33 appearances. The Georgia native has spent his entire major league career with Boston after being selected from the New York Yankees organization in the Rule 5 Draft prior to the 2021 season. In 185 career games, including 23 starts, Whitlock owns a 3.13 ERA with 368 strikeouts over 333.1 innings.

The Red Sox will turn to Samaniego, 27, to help fill the void in the bullpen. The left-hander has impressed during his first major league season, recording a 1.04 ERA while allowing just two earned runs in 17.1 innings over 18 appearances. Opposing hitters are batting .213 against him, and he has struck out 13 batters during that stretch.

Samaniego has also made four relief appearances for Triple-A Worcester this season, allowing four earned runs in 6.1 innings. Acquired by Boston in a December 2025 trade, the Alabama native was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
